Summer Series: Liberty Enlightening the World

August 3, 2016

LibertyGenerations at Oakton Arms was pleased to welcome back our good friend Donna Horwitz and her program “Our American Story” as part of our Summer Series of special events and presentations. Donna also joined us last month for a special presentation about Ellis Island. It was such an informative and engaging event, we knew we had to have her back.

The topic of discussion for this presentation was “Liberty Enlightening the World”, which was all about  the Statue of Liberty. During her presentation Donna discussed how the statue originated, where it is actually located, and what some of the minor details on the Statue represent, as well as more great history and facts.

The residents and guests were very engaged in the presentation and loved the additional facts and trivia. Donna also went in-depth with facts about the builders and designers of the Statue of Liberty and their important role in this historic time.  The presentation concluded with comments and questions from the attendees while some told their own personal stories about friends and families that had a firsthand experience with the Statue of Liberty on their journey to the United States.  It left many in the audience emotional about how much the Statue of Liberty means to others.

Donna decided to start “Our American Story” for seniors after losing her job as an activity director at another rehabilitation facility.  She always felt a special connection with seniors, especially talking and discussing important events that were related to their generation through engaging slide shows and presentations.  In her various presentations she covers over 45 topics including – the White House, Martin Luther King, Eleanor Roosevelt, New England in the Autumn and much more.  Her photos are engaging and help to focus her audience on key facts of the past and how it relates to the future.  She encourages discussion with seniors that attend and she also loves to work with dementia patients to encourage recollection of memories.

Generations at Oakton thanks Donna Horwitz for her engaging and insightful presentation.
